Wolfhill - Sacred Standing Stones
A village near the source of the Burrelton Burn in Perth and Kinross, Wolfhill lies between the Sidlaw Hills and the River Tay, 2 miles (3 km) north east of Guildtown and 7 miles (11 km) north-east of Perth. The area is densely wooded without cultivation from man, and at the top of a hillock is a pair of standing stones. Both are large slabs of rock, irregular but pleasing to view, one has veins of quartz running through it which catches the reflected light of the sun and the other is a plain, dark stone without colour. No lichen or ivy grows on these stones though the difficult path to them stands as testament to the fact that no human hand keeps them free from plants.
Traditions
Standing Stones: To the Meninna and Hirfathra Hissu especially these twin stones have great significance, and have names. The quartz veined stone is called the Stone of Day (or Stone of Light) and the other the Stone of Night (or Stone of Darkness), though together they are sometimes called the Stones of Light (or Stones of the Cycle). A legend of the People says that the Stone of Day is made from the slumbering form of a mighty Helion, most often thought to be one of the Searing, possibly born from Helios fury as Luna blocked His sight of the Earth’s face. It goes on to claim that the Stone of Night is formed from the slumbering form of a Lune (normally thought to be one of the Ralunim or a Glimmering, though those who claim this often go on to press a claim that it’s Luna’s own son, as much as a spirit can be said to have such). The story claims that the Spirits have been locked in combat for an age, bringing disaster and warfare to the Other and to the Flesh so that the Elodoth appealed to both Celestines and made great Chiminage. As long as the stones remain undisturbed the two great spirits will remain trapped within the flesh of the earth. To the Boneshadows it is a place where honour to the great spirits, and their Patrons, is politic and some will travel many hundreds of miles to visit and lay an offering between them, to the Hunters in Darkness Blairmuir Wood place blessedly free of man, and many hold it to be one of the most natural and untouched places in Scotland – scared indeed.
Rituals: It is said that rituals, especially those honouring or calling up Luna, Helios or their servants, have great power when undertaken within or around the Standing Stones. This is but another reason why some Ritesmasters chose to undertake the long and sometimes dangerous trip to Wolfhill.
Eclipse: When there is a full eclipse some of the People will sometimes make the journey to visit the stones to see any change in them. When the sun is blocked the struggles of the Lune within the Stone of Night grow stronger – many of those present will bring gifts pleasing to Helios to ensure the Lune remains within. Similarly when the moon is blocked from the night sky chiminage given to Mother Luna to prevent the Helion from escaping.
