What's a Proxy?

Generally speaking, proxy play is when you send your character somewhere else in the Global Chronicle and relinquish some or all control over what happens to it there (in order for your character to go places he/she could logically go but you can not in real life.)

There are two kinds of proxy: hard and soft. (Yeah, I know.)

Soft Proxy

A soft proxy is when your character travels outside its home area for conversation or other interaction with a character somewhere else, but everybody knows up front that nothing is going to happen that would require an ST's direct involvement. They are usually resolved online and involve only informal ST notification. (”Hey Mr. ST; I’m sending Bob to Toledo this weekend to learn Obfuscate from Sue.” or “Bob needs to talk to Sue in person about this. He’ll fly to Toledo on Tuesday and meet her in the Elysium. See you on AIM.”) You can sometimes get XP for it from your ST if you write it up in a narrative format and submit it as a Character Journal.

Hard Proxy

A hard proxy is when you know up-front that there will be some risk involved in sending your character off, so you submit your sheet, XP log, and a write-up of personality and plans to the ST in charge of the scene/area.

See: Proxy Template, below, for how to write one of these.

Hard proxies come in three flavors:

(1) Down-Time – This is much like a soft proxy, only the interaction may lead to combat, use of powers, or other challenges, or otherwise require an ST. If so, the local ST takes out your character sheet and makes your rolls for you based on the write-up in your proxy submission and your role-play since then. You can get XP for this from your ST if you write it up in a narrative format and submit it as a Character Journal.

(2) Game Session – If you want your character to be at a game that you can’t personally attend, you can often proxy it there. Many STs require that you find someone to actively play your character at the game, because they don’t have the time or resources to keep track of a bunch of characters who “are there” but aren’t. Sometimes you get XP for this, and sometimes you don’t. It’s up to the ST running that game.

(3) Proxy Scene – STs will sometimes host large-scale proxies to resolve scenes that are intended to be or have grown too big to handle at a game session and/or that will involve a whole bunch of people who can’t physically be there. There is usually an online RP component (like through the Yahoo!Group I set up), and the actual action is handled by one or more of the hosting STs sitting at a table with all the character sheets. With the exception of the RP component of the proxy, your character is considered “out of play” until the scene is resolved and the ST releases it. Such proxies are often worth XP, especially if you participate actively in the RP component or it takes the STs a long time to work out what happened.

Proxy Template

Below is the template for your proxy to other domains. You need to send this to the VST of the place your character is going as well as to your own VST in order to be offically out of the domain.

Hello!

Below are the details of my proxy for the character (CHARACTER).
If you have any questions you can contact me at: (PHONE NUMBER)
after (TIMES OF DAY) CST OR by email (YOUR EMAIL) any other time.
Other arrangements, as necessary can be discussed. My ST
information and all vitals should be below. If something is
missing feel free to contact me.

(YOUR NAME)
(YOUR CAM NUMBER)

(How are you getting there)

(when will you leave and when do you plan to return)

(You should attach your normal sheet, exp log, and approval numbers to the
email you send. Please make sure it doesn't need any odd or non-standard software to open!)

(This section is VERY important for the ST if they need to play
your character for any reason so, for you own protection, detail
out a great deal about your pc. Be specific. Give examples if
needed.)

(This let's the ST know what you're here trying to do. This
section might be large detailing out goals you want to accomplish
or simply "I'm here to see bob about ..." The more you share
with the ST the better.)

(This should be pretty easy to understand. Not everyone spends
their blood in the same way, for example, every combat but if you
have a trick you always use, here's a good place to tell the ST
about that.)

(Set out here what order of importance things will take for you such as 1 Stopping the Pure, 2 Saving lives of Friends, 3 Avoiding the Herd; so if tough choices come down the line the ST knows which you would have likely picked to deal with in what order)

AGREED (name).
