Oath of the Moon; a Hunter in Darkness perspective
(by Steve Koty, US2004092110)
From the point of view of Vash Revere, Hunter in Darkness, Cahalith, Pack mate of Ancestral Ties
As a forewarning this is just my humble interpretation of the Oath of the Moon, and not always shared by others. Regardless We the Forsaken do agree about this Point. It is a sacred Oath, it should not be joked about, it is our way to balance Flesh and Spirit
The Wolf Must Hunt
We take this Oath to honour father Wolf. We are the experts on "Hunting our worthy Pray" both of spirit and flesh. We respect our pray and we Honour Father Wolf.
How does this apply to us? Simple. We must keep those that seek to harm the forsaken and the Herd in check. We must keep the spirits from crossing over and harming our world. Even keep the Pure from their misguided beliefs from doing harm to themselves and that that is around them. But do not mistake this for the right to kill those that follow a different path. We Hunt them to stop them not to kill unless all options are gone.
The People Do not Murder the People
Now this is the interesting one. Many debate if the Pure are "Of the People" or what is Considered Murder. If a Forsaken is beaten down and can not continue to fight this would be Murder if you finish them off. If you attack and kill some one for personal gain or out of hatred this is Murder.
If you have no other choice to defend the People or the Herd then is it doing your duty? Some believe that a Kill is a Kill and no matter what if you kill you commit Murder. I would say that this is a self-reflection. Do you feel that you actions where your only option? Do you feel that you gave
them every chance to back down and except defeat? Do you feel that your actions where that of a person doing the greater good? Most importantly do you feel what you did is Murder?. This one truly varies by tribe, pack and person on very degrees. I feel that there is always other ways then
Murdering the People including the Pure. But that is my Moral choice and is all so shared by many.
The Low Honour the High; the High respect the Low
This one seems to be the most violated Oath. We forget to remember that the Elders are more experienced and have faced many of the problems that we are facing at a young age. As with any youth we believe that we know everything and the older ones are living in a time that has longer passed and could not possibly understand today's workings.
Now the ones that have "Paid" their dues seem to forget what is was like to enter this world. They forget that they were like the young with new and different ideals. While the Older ones now more they do get stuck in their ways. The young may not have the wisdom to see the Whole picture but their thought should be listen to with interest as they may have avenues that some forgot but did not realise. They see thing with new eyes and not just one Path.
So what should be taken from this Oath? To the Young listen to your elders as they have faced more then you and have earned your respect for the deeds. To the old, listen to the younger. While their beliefs do differ from yours it does not mean they are wrong. They to be of the People and they are trying to understand. They also bring a fresh light to thinks that have become dim.
Respect your Pray
Your Pray no matter how small or powerful should be Honoured and Respected. Each adversary has is own unique abilities and place in the World of man and Spirit. To not honour it is not only disrespecting it but yourself as well. A field mouse while is weaker then us and not nearly as powerful is still worthy of respect. For their cunning speed and manoeuvrability is something
that it to be admired and a useful tool to have. As sad as this is think of the Rocky Movie the Chicken scene. While Rocky could easily out fight a chicken he could not out move it with long hours of practice. This Oath also has to do with how much you hunt of one thing. Everything has its place in the world and a balance must be maintained. Every time you kill you affect that balance. So be thankful and careful on how much you hunt as you take away from the balance of life. You should honour your pray and give thanks.
The Uratha Shall Cleave to the Human
Simple don’t bang your Sister or Brother. Breeding is important for our "race" to live but incest is not the best so don't put your family to the test. Too many stories of Spirit born are around to argue this. By Uratha mating with Uratha these horrid beast are created and wreak havoc on all. Even the barer of these children face such pain and agonies that they would almost rather have died then carry it to term. The herd or Wolf Blooded are best suited for this act. They give the child their flesh form and their humanity
Do not eat the Flesh of Man or Wolf
How simply this is stated. It is perverse to commit such cannibalism by any standard in this age. Not only that but it serves no purpose to do so. Food is readily available for consumption. Whether you like is a different story but they say hunger is the best seasoning. There are human tribes now and in the past that believe that to eat the heart of ones enemy is to gain their power, but I offer this word on insight up of thought. If you have beaten your enemy then why would you want their power that has proven weaker then your own? You have proven to be the more powerful so let it rest at that and your own self worth.
And lastly;
The Herd must not Know
Wolf blooded are the Herd as well. Why should the Herd not know of us and what we do? Most could not handle it. People want things simple, they want thing that they can rationalize. To find out that everything they thought was true is not would shatter their mind. They would either become useless and fear their own shadow or it would become the dark ages again. They would hunt us to extinction and we would not be able to do or duties. They would not understand that we hold back that which would destroy their world. It would be as if we were Jews hiding in Germany during WW 2 as they would seek to destroy us. We would be the Scapegoat for all that is / was wrong in the world.
I know other will disagree with my views and in fact that is good cause without. Disagreement we can re-evaluate our lives and ideals. But to say the Oath of the Moon is a Joke is to insult all of those that take this scared Vow.
