Calling Down the Thunder; Northern Regional 2006

Ever since the 1960’s the fear of nuclear power has been expressed through the dreams of humanity, through their art, through poetry, through protest, through policy of atomic weaponry, through B movies. Nuclear power has shaped much of the way life is lived. It is true that what shapes the dreams and thoughts of the masses reflects itself in the Shadow. These reflections are not true, these spiritual likenesses do not accurately present the truth, but instead start as the flavour of fears and hopes and take on their own strange life.

For millennia the Tribes of the Moon have stood as guardians of the border marches, taking the mantle of Father Wolf for themselves. Sometimes this is glorious war where packs will join to fight alongside to battle mighty and insidious foes. More often the Urdaga stake out territory and patrol it endlessly – striving to keep the spirit and the flesh apart. Every so often something happens, something changes, a call goes out.

A clarion call to battle echoes across the Shadow, a solitary wolf’s howl sounds through the city, a desperate phone call summons aid through empty air, an email calling for help reflects the dreams of the Cahalith. February of 2006 the call goes out – will the Tribes of the Moon step forward to deal with the threat unknown, or will the comfort of familiar surroundings prove too great? Forsaken at the Northern Regional, eyes in the darkness strain to see. Will you hunt or be hunted?

The call has gone out to meet at the Coniston Coppermines YHA, which has been hired for the purpose. Almost halfway up a mountain with a view to match, this hostel is surrounded by fells, allowing hillwalkers easy access onto Wetherlam and the Old Man of Coniston itself. There could be anything coming up, so talk and preparation before tackling Sellafield is the idea.

Its known that there is a traditional Tur atop Coniston (rumoured to be at the Old Man itself) but it has fallen out of use in recent years. ((note: any Storm Lords or Cahalith interested in history may know that some of the most violent storms to have hit Northern England are rumoured to be because of Storm Lord gathers at the Old Man)).

There are few established or powerful Loci in this part of Cumbria, they tend to form and move, drift and grow, live and die almost at random.

There are protests around the Sellafield plant, hundreds (some reports say thousands) of irate anti-nuclear protestors having the plant under siege. Plenty of security (dozens) backed up with a very visible police presence have kept things contained for the moment. A growing number of rabble rousers are suggesting that the plant needs to be shut down now no matter the cost…

Backlash from the brutal murders of three locals in Calder Bridge (near to the plant) has been harsh – deep suspicion is being aimed at these protestors and activists. One thing is sure – the entire area is deeply troubled, fear, anger, suspicion lurk in dark corners. Will the thing bound within Calder Hall be released, or will the true foe be the violence of the mob?

Welcome to the Northern Regional – are you the hunter, or the hunted?
