Custom Mechanics: Fetishes

These are new Fetishes created by players and STs and sanctioned for use in the Camarilla UK.

Please note that the following 3 Fetishes are NOT APPROVED at this time.

Ritual Circle (OOOO)

This fetish is somewhat unusual in that rather than being a single item it is a collection of items with potent ritual symbolism that (taken together) functions as a single Fetish. The items must be ritually buried around the edge of a specially prepared ritual circle, which may be within the Pale of a Locus, within a Cairn (see Centering the Cairn, The Rage p178), within a ritual circle which is part of a protectorate (see Ritual Bonuses, The Rage p176) or similar. These items are then connected to the land and attuned to the flows of Essence in such a way that the energies contained in the objects mesh, thus empowering the ritual circle.

As the fetish consists of a large number of small items that are interconnected for the fetish to function, the fetish is not easily moved (not to mention it requires quite a lot of digging to uncover all of it). It requires approximately 10 minutes worth of work to dismantle the fetish before moving it, and then several hours of work to realign the fetish once it has been moved to its new site, with 10 successes required on an extended fetish activation test, with each draw representing one hour to successfully do so.

Furthermore, due to the precise nature of the alignments needed for this fetish to function, as well as the chiminage demanded by the spirit of ritual that inhabits the fetish, it requires at least an hour of maintenance to be performed each month on the ritual circle that this fetish is empowering. This maintenance chiminage usually consists of minor adjustments to the placing of items within the ritual circle, as well as ritual chanting and the burning of incense.

Should the maintenance chiminage fail to be performed at least once every lunar month (often on the night of the crescent moon), then the fetish will cease to function and will require a major realignment in a similar manner as if it had been moved.

However, the reward to the Ritualist for all this effort is a great one indeed. Functioning properly, the fetish will give a +5 modifier to Rituals tests for any who use the ritual circle that the fetish has been attuned to, which usually takes several hours of preparation and dedication to the circle (and requires a successful Meditation check). The Fetish must be activated (sometimes called “opening the circle”) before a Rite is enacted within to gain the benefit for the Ritualist.

Fetish Points (mechanics)

Total Fetish Points = 40; 4 point fetish.

Ritualists Stave (OOO)

Perhaps the most common tool of any Ritualist is a staff, in some places it’s almost a badge of office. Many Ritemasters prefer to craft their tool into a Fetish which can aid them, and a Ritualists Stave is perhaps a good example of that. A spirit, commonly a spirit of wisdom or patience, is bound within a staff – which should be wood harvested by the Ritemaster, and normally decorated with ritual items both to proclaim to the People that the wielder is a Ritualist, but also to better act as a conduit for ritual energies. When used as a focus in a Ritual it grants a bonus (+2) to the Ritemaster, and can also be used as a stout quarterstaff if they find themselves in trouble.

The Fetish must be activated (sometimes called “blessing the ritual”) before a Rite is enacted within to gain the benefit for the Ritualist. Additionally each of these useful Fetishes has a cost with it, each time they are used the spirit within must be shown proper respect for their help – chiminage in the form of a ritual cleaning must be done within hours of the Fetishes use (before dawn the following day). If the Fetish is used multiple times in a day it needs to be cleansed once only.

Damage 2B (+1 defence), Durability 5 (2+3), Size 4/N, Structure 2, Action: Instant

Ritualists Tool (OO)

This can take one of many forms and each Ritualist who crafts one (few like to have one crafted for them) choose one based on their preferred style of ritual, materials to hand and the type of spirits which they have easiest access to. Whilst it can be of almost any form some are more popular than others and medallions, ritual masks and musical instruments (especially drums or rattles) are amongst the more common forms of this type of Fetish.

Whilst each of these Fetishes is unique in form, in function they are similar.
