Danby High Moor
A pair of rocks contain ‘cups’ – water collecting in these recesses contains natural essence – and is near to Loose Howe (a round barrow which sits on top of a hill with fantastic views all around but especially to the south). Loose Howe was excavated in 1937 and was found to have a kerb of upright stones surrounding a central clear area. This area held part of a coffin and a canoe, the coffin lid being canoe-shaped, all being made from oak trunks. The coffin contained a body, three flints and a bronze dagger. A secondary burial was found lower down the mound and it contained a funerary urn with bronze dagger, a bronze pin and a stone axe.
These are thought to be the remains of two great Pure warriors and this site, one of the highest in the Moors, is sacred to the Pure Tribes who howl their hate towards Mother Luna on clear nights. None of Luna's faithful have seen inside the barrow but it is thought that some of the darker rituals of the Pure may take place here.
