Eagle Warriors; the Brotherhood of the Eagle

Tales say that the Eagle Warriors originally came to Britain with the Romans. In some stories the success of the Legions was due to mighty werewolves who did battle alongside the iron-discipline of the legions; some claim these were the Eagle Warriors. Others claim that the Legions, even the Senate of Rome, was manipulated by them - or that the hard men who came to claim Britain for their Empire were wolf-blooded kin to the People. Or that they were all Ridden, Claimed by a single mighty spirit of war and conquest.

The Brothers of the Eagle tell these tales too, but there is always one difference. They tell of a group of Werewolves who put the good of the community above their lives - tied by bonds of conflict, each was a citizen of Rome and had served in the Legions - they sought dangers to the Flesh and to the Shadow in order to safeguard society.

Membership of the Eagle Warriors was simple; you had to be a veteren of Rome's armies. It didn't matter if you had campaigned for 20 years or if you had served one battle standing in reserve there was just one thing that was important; that you had been prepared to sacrifice your life for the good of society as a whole.

When they arrived in Britannia the Eagle Warriors found warrior societies and feirce people. At no point did they attempt to do more than live within them - some of the proven warriors of the People, or their families, grew close to them and in time took the Oath of the Eagle and so swelled the ranks of the Brotherhood.

Maiden Castle became one of the strongholds of the Eagle Warriors after so many of the People of the South of England took the Oath that they were more than a group of allied packs - they had become a province in their own right. The Senate of Feathers was formed, one from each Pack selected to represent them in a grand council formed at Maiden Castle. At times of conflict a warleader would be selected to raise the Legion - members of the Brotherhood would leave their territories and packs to gather together. This force was enough to face down great warbands of Pure, to famously destroy the rat-horde of Bristol and especially seeking Wounds in the Shadow.

After Maiden Castle fell to a Bale Hound in the late 450's the power of the Eagle Warriors was effectively broken, however, they have remained a part of the folklore of the British Uratha, and there are still those who call themselves Eagle Warriors. Some think the legends of Arthur, of Robin Hood, of Saint George and of other folk heroes may be the Brothers of the Eagle.

Traditions

Maiden Castle - this prehistoric castle was the site of the Senate of Feathers, and was a major stronghold for the Eagle Warriors before the actions of the Maeljin brought the senate to an end in a conflict of suspicion and bloodshed.

Joining the Eagle Warriors - is both easy and very difficult. To be a member of the Eagle Warriors you must have fought the enemies of the People, putting your life on the line for the greater good of society (which can be family, friends, Tribe, Lodge, Pack or territory), be prepared to swear the Oath of the Eagle and find a member of the Brotherhood who is prepared to stand for you before the others of the Brotherhood. There is no requirement to have sworn the Oath of the Moon (though few Eagle Warriors will consider a Ghost Wolf who has not as being suitable) nor to have gone through their first change - indeed some of the greatest leaders amongst the Brotherhood have not been Uratha! As long as there are no objections, and in some cases tasks may be set to prove ones worth, then upon swearing the Oath of the Eagle the new initiate is welcomed as a Brother, though is frowned on calling themselves an Eagle Warrior till they have proved themselves in battle alongside their new Brothers.

Oath of the Eagle - the Oath all Eagle Warriors swear is simple; "From this day forth the People are my people, and their needs i place before mine own". There are few who would not die if that will bring a needed victory - to close a Wound or see off a Pure incursion. That said, the Brotherhood realise that not all battles are physical - there are academics, scouts and all other manner of Uratha and wolf-blooded kin who do not consider combat to be their forte within the Brotherhood and they are held in as high esteem as their warrior Brothers.

Organisation - the Elders of the Eagle Warriors are those who have survived countless encounters with the enemy and who are respected. In some cases groups of Eagle Warriors will form close bonds (though rarely as strong as a pack bond) and name themselves a Cohort. When the Brothers of the Eagle march to do battle they will select one to lead them, deferring to them in all things till the encounter is done. Only then are challenges of dominance or action taken.
